Noise, or unwanted sound, is one of the most common environmental exposures in the United States. Vehicle noise directly impact public health. Research shows it impact:
#cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, high blood pressure
#stress
#hearing loss.

Children exposed to noise may experience impaired learning, lower academic achievement, behavioral problems, and lower self-esteem. Adults may face reduced productivity and communication difficulties.

Noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) is completely preventable. NIHL is not repairable. Hence NIHL is permanent.

MODIFIED MUFFLERS ARE ILLEGAL IN GEORGIA

GA Code § 40-8-71 It shall be unlawful for any person to sell or offer for sale any muffler which causes excessive or unusual noise or annoying smoke or any muffler cutout, bypass, or similar device for use on a motor vehicle or for any person to use, to sell, or to offer for sale any motor vehicle equipped with any such muffler, muffler cutout, bypass, or similar device. Any person violating this subsection shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.

What is "excessive or unusual noise"? From a public safety standpoint, excessively loud vehicles can mask emergency sirens and sometimes suggest unauthorized modifications. Noise from audio systems or exhausts may diminish drivers' and pedestrians' ability to detect vital signals, directly impacting overall safety.

What is too Loud?
Adjusted decibel levels are used to account for factors like human hearing sensitivity and exposure time. A-weighted decibels (dBA) are the most common adjustment, reflecting how the human ear perceives loudness across different frequencies

Examples of decibel levels:
30 dBA: A whisper
60 dBA: Normal conversation
70 dBA: Washing machine, dishwasher,
85 dBA: Noisy restaurant/power lawnmower
100 dBA: A passing train/ football game
110 dBA: Loud music at a concert
120 dBA: Nearby siren
140 dBA: Explosion

Taylor Swift concert- over 100 decibels, some recordings 111 and 121 dBA, peak 42 dBA.

Movie theater 74 dBA to 104 dBA,

Shopping Center 67 dBA to 83 dBA
Shopping Center Food Court 75 dBA-83 dBA

Continued Exposure over 70 dBA can cause hearing damage

Measuring Decibel Levels is as easy as using your phone.

NIOSH Sound Level Meter App (iOS)
