Whatās the motivation behind the OUSD 500 On the Water Project?
Research shows that paddlesports and other outdoor activities offer children a range of benefits, including improved focus, reduced stress, better school attendance, and enhanced academic performance (California Surgeon Generalās Report, 2020). Early exposure to nature also fosters lifelong environmental stewardship.
However, not all children have equal access to these experiences. Oakland Goes Outdoors addresses this gap by collaborating with program partners like Sea Trek to provide Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) students with affordable, accessible paddlesports and other outdoor opportunities. This program tackles common barriers like cost, transportation, gear, and access to skilled guides, ensuring that more young people can reap the benefits of outdoor adventure.
