From the Galapagos to the St. Johns River: Connecting Students to Science

When Logan Davis, a teacher leader at River City Science Academy Innovation, traveled to the Galapagos Islands for a professional development program, she wasn’t just thinking about her own growth—she was thinking about her students back home in Jacksonville.
Inspired by field research and conservation work abroad, Logan returned determined to make science more interactive and locally relevant for her 8th-grade Biology students. Through a partnership with Jacksonville University’s Marine Science Research Lab, she launched a hands-on project focused on studying microplastics and water quality in the St. Johns River—right in our own backyard.
Because of our generous donors and the Cindy Edelman Excellence in Teaching fellowship, JPEF was able to help make this kind of teacher-driven innovation possible. Your ongoing contributions allow JPEF to provide professional learning opportunities and classroom support that spark real-world connections for students—bridging the gap between global learning and local impact.
Today, more than 150 students have participated in this project—building environmental awareness, scientific thinking, and a stronger connection to their community. Just like Jacksonville’s bridges, 7x7 donors create lasting connections—between teachers and resources, students and opportunities, and learning and life.
