OUR MISSION
Avalon Ocean Club empowers youth through ocean exploration and education, nurturing a deep love and respect for the ocean while expanding their horizons. We foster personal growth, resilience, and confidence, guiding each participant to become their best self. Through safe, engaging, and educational ocean-based adventures, we cultivate a lifelong connection to the ocean and the natural world.
OUR COMMUNITY
The city of Avalon is home to a small population of locals who live on the island year-round. There are limited opportunities for local children to safely engage in structured ocean activities. Our program, sponsored by the Newport Aquatic Center, fills this gap by offering ocean swimming, safety, and paddling instruction in a supportive environment when other options are unavailable. We provide children with the chance to disconnect from screens, enjoy the outdoors, and explore their natural surroundings.
OUR PROGRAM
Focused on water safety, our program teaches open-water swimming, essential ocean skills, and builds confidence in the water. Participants learn to read waves and ocean conditions through body surfing, boogie boarding, and surfing. We also cover key topics like tides, currents, and rip currents to help kids make safe, informed decisions in the ocean. CPR and first aid training are included, along with basic nutrition guidance to support overall health and readiness. This hands-on program fosters leadership, resilience, and a lifelong respect for the ocean.
OUR TEAM
Dempsey and Madison are Southern California Ocean Lifeguards and Junior Lifeguard Instructors. With over fifteen years of combined experience in ocean safety, coaching, and program management, their deep connection to the ocean fuels their work.
Recognizing the critical need for ocean access and education for Avalon youth, they are leading the charge—creating programs that provide safe, structured, and inspiring introductions to the marine environment.
Their work goes beyond recreation. It creates pathways to careers in water safety, emergency response, and the maritime industry—sparking awareness and ambition among island youth. By offering accessible entry points into ocean-related fields, Dempsey and Madison are building a pipeline of opportunity for the next generation of water safety professionals and maritime workers.
OUR FUTURE
Ocean Club Cadets – Empowering the Next Wave. We are currently a dedicated two-woman team with a powerful vision: to inspire and train the next generation of lifeguards and swim instructors through our Ocean Club Cadets program. Our goal is to create a sustainable pipeline of ocean safety leaders by empowering our students to mentor younger peers—training the trainers of tomorrow.
From creating access to safe and fun ocean experiences to empowering young athletes to pursue their aquatic dreams, we believe the big blue sea should be an inclusive space where all children can grow confident, capable, and connected to their environment.
