D’Arcy Reynolds

D’Arcy Reynolds’ new composition is a multi-media work that embraces various musical influences of Mexico: indigenous, Spanish, Cuban, and African. The piece reflects the myths, legends and history of Mexico, and the arc of the musical storyline is expansive, ranging from pre-Hispanic times to the present day in the Lake Chapala region. Environmental sustainability and international development themes will be threaded through the work. She plans to work with and learn from Initiatives such as CreSer, a non-profit for the Coca people, along with environmental organizations such as the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands and the International Climate Initiative. These efforts provide tangible support for the indigenous people and ecological healing in the Lake Chapala region.

D’Arcy is collaborating with local musicians and artists in Ajijic, Mexico: Juanpi Medeles (musical director and violinist) and members of Mariachi Real Axixic; visual artists include Jesus Victoriano Lopez Vega, painter and muralist, Xill Fessenden, photographer, Monica Careenas, photographer, and filmmaker, TBA. Their work will provide the visual narrative that supports the arc of the musical storyline.

In addition to the new multi-media work, we plan to create a documentary with interviews of the artists, musicians, and environmental activists who are working in the Lake Chapala region. The music and accompanying documentary are analogous to the South African documentary Inner Landscape (which details my compositional process in Cloven Dreams) along with the documentary, Miss Helen’s Owl House.

One goal of the Way of Abiding is to educate and move audiences to take action to support indigenous communities and to work toward environmental justice. Secondly, the extremely rich artistic milieu of Mexico will be honored and revealed to more US audiences. Thirdly, the creative process of the artistic and environmental contributors discussed in the documentary will deepen audiences’ understanding of the substance, creation and performance of this multi-disciplinary work.

The Mexican premiere will be held in Ajijic, Mexico, and the US premiere will take place in the San Francisco Bay Area in the summer and fall of 2028.
