Verna's Home Repair
At 84, Verna needed specific home modifications to ensure she could age safely in her beloved West Philadelphia rowhome. Through the Inglis Home Modifications for Independence (HMI) Program, Verna partnered with Habitat Philadelphia to receive essential repairs to her home. Now, Verna has accessible grab bars and lights for her basement steps; a shower chair, handheld shower head and adjustable handrail for her bathroom; and stable front and backdoor steps with firm railings.

“I can’t express how much I appreciate it,” she says. These repairs now allow Verna to move around her home confidently and age in place without worry.

Mantua Powelton Alliance
The Mantua Powelton Alliance recently granted Habitat for Humanity Philadelphia $400,000 to provide anti-displacement and home stabilization repairs for existing low- and moderate-income homeowners in Mantua and Powelton Village. This community partnership ensured that 16 homes are structurally sound and meet the needs for daily living.

Trish Downey, MPA board member, said, "When you keep people in the home they're in — make them more comfortable, safer, healthier — you're helping them maintain the connections they've already built in the community."

Matt's Home Repair
In 2023, a storm caused severe damage to Matt and his wife’s home in West Philadelphia, leading to persistent leaks and mold in their kitchen and laundry room. As a military veteran and doctorate student, the cost of repairs was overwhelming. After discovering Habitat Philadelphia’s Home Repair program, the couple received critical repairs, including a new roof, vinyl flooring, and mold removal.

The damage had been a cause of much worry and stress but since the repairs, Matt expressed that, "cooking at home again is the biggest difference" and "now, I know my home is healthy and I can focus on my studies in comfort."

Ikenya's Home Repair
For 23 years, Ikenya poured her heart into the Southwest Philadelphia home where she raised her two daughters. But without funds to replace the severely worn roof, the security of her family was threatened. After her home repairs, Ikenya can rest assured that her home will stand strong for generations to come.

Ikenya says, "To be a homeowner is a blessing. It is loving to be with your family and having something for them."

Brenda's Home Repair
Brenda, an elderly woman, had a leaking roof which rendered her kitchen unusable. As a dedicated member of her local congregation, she had been bringing baked goods to church for many years. But without access to her kitchen, she could no longer bake and eventually stopped going.

When the Habitat repair team completed her renovation work, she was excited to have a full kitchen to better manage her health. She started baking for the community again, reconnecting with her congregation and bringing joy to others.
