The Challenge

Coral reefs are threatened by climate change, with marine heatwaves causing coral die-offs faster than they can recover on their own. In the past year, 77% of the world’s reefs experienced coral bleaching, with significant mortality.

Corals build the reef habitats that support 30% of all named marine species. Reefs provide people with employment, food, recreation, and culture; and they form natural breakwaters that protect shorelines. All told, the global annual value of coral reefs approaches $10 trillion.
