My name is Karina Steigerwald, a 24-year-old 3rd grade teacher in NYC. This past year, I had the incredible experience of running the NYC marathon, Ironman 70.3 Indian Wells, and Ironman 70.3 Western Massachusetts. I’m gearing up for the full 140.6 Mile Ironman Maryland on September 21!

Growing up, I was inspired by my dad as he competed in eight full Ironman races and numerous half-Ironman events. His passion for an active lifestyle and his drive to achieve the seemingly impossible left a lasting impression on me. Attending Ironman races was a highlight of my childhood, offering cherished moments spent with family and friends in new places, all united in cheering on our dads.

What truly stood out to me was my dad and his friends racing with Team Will, raising awareness and funds for the Barth Syndrome Foundation. I was fortunate to meet Will, a brave, positive, and humorous individual. Like my dad, I am excited to carry on the mission of raising awareness, advancing treatments, and working toward a cure for Barth syndrome.

For those unfamiliar, Barth syndrome is an ultra-rare genetic disorder that damages hearts, weakens skeletal muscles, and compromises the immune system. Despite these challenges, Will fought valiantly for 28 years. My dad often said that if Will could cheer him on through an all-day Ironman race, he couldn’t give up without finishing. I aim to carry that torch for Will, my dad, and Team Will. I invite you to join me in this journey.
