FOSTER GRANDPARENTS

The AmeriCorps Seniors Foster Grandparent Program gives adults aged 55 and older an opportunity to remain engaged in their community and to share their talent, expertise and compassion with young children who need a little extra help to be successful in school.

Making a difference in the life of a child has mental health benefits for both the Foster Grandparent volunteers and the young children who need extra support and attention. Additionally, the program helps local schools because teachers who are already stretched thin can rely on Foster Grandparent volunteers so that all children get what they need to be successful in school. Lastly, the program provides benefits for families and the larger community when young children develop trusting, caring relationships with supportive adults.

“ Being able to help kids when they need help and being able to be with the kids that might need a hug or a smile. That’s basically my favorite part,” says Foster Grandparent volunteer Jane Berry. Jane remembers a preschool student whose family was in crisis: “With a lot of support from me and other people, she got herself together. She’s a senior in high school and doing well.”
